Cool, that makes sense. Yeah, I was always kind of impressed by Paul's drumming on post-Beatles records - I guess it's not surprising that he was exerting that sort of influence on Ringo's drum parts, too.

Paul and Ringo have both claimed separately that the drum parts for Ticket To Ride and Tomorrow Never Knows were Paul's idea. The other couple of times I've mentioned this, it's been on songs where Paul definitely had a big production input, where they were trying for a new production style so paying more attention to details, and where the drumming sounds like those patterns and *doesn't* sound like Ringo's normal style. Paul played several parts like that on his own solo things as well, so I'm pretty confident in saying that Paul suggested those other (two or three) uses

Just discovered these Mono Reviews of yours, and I'm really enjoying them, but I'm curious -- how do you know this stuff about a "Paul McCartney Drum Part" played by Ringo "under Paul's instruction"? Did Ringo or Paul explicitly discuss this in an interview somewhere, or are you only inferring/guessing that the drum part was Paul's idea? I'm really curious as to where this is from.

Not the greatest Beatles album, but it still holds up well enough 40-some odd years later.

I always liked the fact that, from cover photo to the songs themselves, the Fab Four look and sound so burnt out from Beatlemania. Sometimes the dashed-off bits can reveal more about an artist than well thought out masterpieces.

And I'm OK with Mister Moonlight. But then again, I like 'Til There Was You. :)

I recently got the mono box set and it's been interesting listening. By the time I started listening to the Beatles the albums from Help onwards were only available in stereo. The first four mono albums are nearly as unfamiliar, since I was never very interested in this phase of their career--I've checked the CDs out from the library a couple of times, but when I was a kid I never bothered to buy these albums on cassette.

In fact, when I listened to Beatles for Sale I realized I'd never heard this album at all. I'd heard most of the individual songs--a couple on a "greatest hits" compilation I had once and others on the radio--but never together, and "Every Little Thing" and "What You're Doing" were new to me. "What You're Doing" inspired some particularly weird deja vu--it seemed familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. After a moment I realized it was the song that had been mashed up with "Drive My Car" on Love.

I've always liked "No Reply," "I'm a Loser," and "Eight Days a Week," and I like the two new-to-me songs as well, but I agree that as an album this is less than the sum of its parts. In particular (I find I'm impatient with the cover versions on these early albums, mostly because the songs themselves are rarely interesting.)

I don't mind "Mr. Moonlight," though. And I'm fine with Hammond organs in moderation.

I'm absolutely entranced by Lennon's opening wail on Mr. Moonlight, but I must confess to usually skipping ahead after that first five seconds or so. Still not sure it's the worst thing the Beatles ever did. For some reason I can't stand "Act Naturally," well done as it might be.

I like to listen to this album as a moody counterpoint to the generally jolly Hard Day's Night if I can. With the exception of "I'll Be Back," none of the downer songs on HDN actually sound like downers. There's a nice sort of grittiness about For Sale; I like to listen to it either on a really cold night or a really hot night.

Ha! I'll back you up on Mr. Moonlight.

Beatles For Sale was of course not available in Canada until very recently -- we had Beatles '65 instead. Which was okay, but over here you can tell a real Beatles fan by the way they covet the genuine article...
