Oh yes, Anathem definitely gets into some of these areas, and does so fascinatingly. I loved the idea of the "Hylaean Theoric World", and the upstream/downstream stuff. I don't know why I didn't mention it, since you touched on at least one aspect in the post that specifically reminded me of the book. Great stuff, and there's a hell of a lot more to the book as well. I love Stephenson, so I'm kind of an easy sell for anything he writes.

Sounds good - I'll have to remember to check that out. Incidentally, the *best* fictional treatment of these subjects I've read, by a long way, is Neal Stephenson's Anathem (his most recent novel).

If you want an entertaining fictional take on some of these theories, I recommend Paul DiFillipo's Fuzzy Dice, a hilarious romp through a variety of theoretical realities, including a two-dimensional one, and a sort of "cosmic egg" populated by beings that manipulate universes so that they have interesting physical laws more likely to create life. I found it very enjoyable, and it covers some of these crazy theories in a way that's understandable and makes for a good story. For people like me who have trouble getting into theoretical stuff (if only because of lack of time), it's a decent alternative.

Penguin in Australia has published a collection of classics for $10 each, including the excellent "Six Easy Pieces" by Richard Feynman which is a bit old but still good, and "The Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene which is an excellent read and covers the full range of physics up to String Theory and HoloGraphic Universes.

Personally I can't see a big difference between Grant Morrison's Hypertime and the old multiverse theories of Mark Gruenwald and Dean Mullaney that were published in the magazine Omniverse. It's all a question of perspective to the universes.
