I absolutely agree with every word of this. If somebody is dying and in extreme pain, no matter what they've done you let them die with their family. That's just basic humanity. And nobody should be forced to choose between dying with their family but still considered guilty of mass murder, or dying in prison in a strange country but with the possibility of clearing their name.

To follow up with my actual thoughts:

Although I'd add that I still think his guilt or innocence should be irrelevant when deciding whether to show compassion towards a dying man. I realise I'm in the minority here, but I think compassion is the greatest power we can wield, and there shouldn't be an argument about it.

However, the 'compassionate grounds' non-argument is utterly separate and much much less important than actually upholding justice, which is why I'm particularly saddened that he was required to drop his appeal when he got to the point where being able to die with dignity became more important than seeking the truth.

The whole thing has made me very angry with the American Government - and ours, as well, but the Democrats valuing vengeance over compassion and either over justice are the biggest let down, for this idealist.
