I think it's highly unlikely Ed 'Beanz' as I like to know him will be on a book you want to read, AH.

I think it's a good review, and find it hard to take seriously anyone who uses the word 'snark' openfacedly, really; fairly balanced - it is nice to see someone utilise the always underutilised segment of the Batman mythos, Martha Wayne a/k/a the Moms, and I think yr points about Death are very insightful - to me, Gaiman has never come close to eclipsing Sandman, and too often takes the mimsy and sentimentalist route, as was somewhat the case here. I'm not sure - and this probably leans toward unfair speculation - if differences in their upbringing, as against Moore, Morrison or the much more capable imo Ennis, who all seem strongly working-class rooted, may have a part to play.

Sandman, though; it's hard to overstate how important, even although the shadow of Moore's Swamp Thing lies heavy upon it, is and was to me. I imagine I would not read comics now were it not for that series.

I think Gaiman's a victim of his own talent. I think he can produce good work - and even sometimes great work - without really trying, so he doesn't push himself. A shame, as he could be one of the greats. I mean, I buy all his stuff, and enoy a lot of it, but he's only very occasionally *on fire*, whereas Moore, who he obviously owes a lot to, really *works* at his writing. Moore's probably the lesser natural talent, but he's by far the better writer.

Still, he has millions of fans, tons of money, strings of bestselling books and shelves full of awards. I'm sure he doesn't really care what we think...

Oh God, perhaps I should get on Twitter. Keeping up with Web 2.0 is such a bloody bore, but if I want my blog to get maximum exposure, etc...

Haven't read this yet, although I quite want to. I broadly agree about Gaiman. Talented certainly, and capable of producing good comics, but I often find his stuff curiously lacking in any real subtextual depth. Not necessarily a bad thing, but odd nonetheless.

Also, you know, *Delirium*

Okay, it was a long time ago, but that shit's difficult to come back from

I did. I also got rather a large number of angry 'tweets' from Gaiman fans who thought I had some deep personal hatred for him (although I would say, if you ever want to drive huge amounts of traffic to your blog, just say something insulting about a universally-beloved author where said author can see it...).

Gaiman himself was remarkably good about the whole thing, exchanging a couple more messages in a very polite manner - he took the review rather better than I would have if it had been written about me.

I still stand by my main point, though - Gaiman's good, but often very lazy.I think if he wrote half as many books he'd be twice as good...
